» WORD COUNT, 451
Once the fluorescent gym lights flickered on, Marin drew out Doku’s pokéball from the waistband of her sweatpants. It was training day, and it would be Doku’s first since obtained him as a starter. She clenched the pokéball in her palm; hopefully, he would behave long enough to last the entire session.
“Ready for this?” she asked him, staring at the capsule. Her brows furrowed, and she tossed it in the air. “Then come on out!”
In a flash of light, her Croagunk appeared with a squealing croak. She watched as his lean muscles rippled beneath that moist skin, slick with poison. He was a powerful Pokémon, but he needed this training.
“Okay,” she began calmly, even as her Croagunk hopped about on the training floor’s mat. “I know you’re excited, but let’s do this right, Doku.”
The Croagunk made a droning cry and bobbed his head with anticipation; the poison sacs in his cheeks swelled and collapsed repeatedly. Once Doku faced her, Marin gestured to him with conviction.
“We’ll focus on your Poison Sting today.”
Doku readied his arms, giving her a motion with his hand that said “bring it on.” Marin nodded, her garnet-colored eyes intense. She then gestured to the wall that hugged the side of the training grounds. All along it, she had set up targets for practice; it had been a grueling process at five in the morning, but she hoped it’d be worth the effort.
“Try and hone your attack towards the center, Doku. Okay?”
The Croagunk was shuddering with excitement now, his shoulders rolling and legs twitching as his big, yellow eyes glared at the first ring-target. He opened his mouth, a gurgling noise at the back of his throat.
“Wait for my signal!” she commanded firmly, glaring at Doku as his mouth closed. He ducked his head, looking bashful. Marin nodded and sighed; he was too eager for his own good. “Okay, Doku, use Poison Sting!”
Quick as a flash, Doku emitted an array of sharp, iridescent purple needles from his mouth. The stabbed the ring-target, making it shiver; the needles were sloppy, but they all at least hit the target. Marin nodded, impressed, as Doku went down the line of targets; each time, his Poison Sting became more and more accurate.
By the last target, Doku hit his mark. He made a trilling noise of pride and hopped to his trainer happily. She smiled and would have pat his head, had he not be drenched in poison.
“Well done, Doku. Atta boy.”
They left the targets, some dripping with the venom of Doku’s Poison Sting, the others, barely clinging to the wall… threatening to fall to the ground after enduring those blows.
