Naturally, you're probably wondering what Pokemon you can start with. Well, this is the page to read for that info. However, rather than make a long-ass list of what Pokemon can be picked, I figured it'd be easier to list the Pokemon that cannot be picked. But before that, there are a few quick guidelines for when it comes to selecting your starters.
1) New trainers are allowed to choose two starter Pokemon. However, if, for whatever reason, you only wish to start with one, you may do so. Just make a note somewhere in your profile letting us know that you're doing so intentionally
2) Usually, it goes without saying that the Pokemon needs to be in its base evolution form. However, there are five Pokemon that are exceptions to this;
- Pikachu - Clefairy - Jigglypuff - Marill - Roselia
These Pokemon, despite being evolved from a baby Pokemon, are still counted as being in their base evolution form, meaning they can be chosen as a Starter and selected in an event that otherwise limits you to a basic-stage Pokemon. However, if you do so, you will not have access to any of the moves they learn exclusively in their baby forms (for example, Pichu can learn Nasty Plot. Pikachu, however, cannot). Additionally, since they're technically considered to be base Pokemon, you will have to evolve them with a Single Evolution, and not the second Multiple Evolution.
3) Next, there's the moves your Pokemon can have. You can choose almost any four moves they can learn via level-up. There's only one limit in this regard, and that is none of the moves can exceed a base power of 70. After all, it doesn't really make sense for a Pokemon that one is starting with to have access to super-powerful attacks right off the bat. If you wish, you're more than welcome to teach stronger moves after the fact, so long as you have the Credits for it.
4) As one last note, you do not have to obtain your starter(s) at the lab. If you so wish, you can say that your character met the Pokemon before they started their journey, and that they simply decided to bring them with them. Either way, unless you specify in your character's history that they obtained them in some other way, it will be assumed that they received their starters at the lab.
---------------------------
In any case, as mentioned above, there are some Pokemon that cannot be chosen as starters. There are also a few Pokemon who can be chosen as starters, but with certain conditions involved. In any case, such Pokemon are listed below;
Uncommon Uncommon Pokemon are rather simple. They cannot be chosen as a starter Pokemon. That said, they can be still be found normally in the wild, so not all hope of obtaining them is lost for those who want to do so early on. Here's the list of uncommon Pokemon;
- All Pokemon with only one Evolution stage (for example, Tauros or Hawlucha). Mega Evolutions do not count as an Evolution stage, so Pokemon such as Heracross and Sableye are still uncommon. - All Dragon-type Pokemon that aren't Psuedo-legendary. - Onix - Scyther - Lickitung - Porygon - Eevee - Ralts - Nosepass - Feebass - Swablu - Trapinch - Munchlax - Riolu - Zorua - Skrelp - Honedge
Restricted If we start getting people choosing too many of one particular species as their starter, then that Pokemon will be listed here. If a Pokemon is listed as restricted, then it cannot be chosen as a starter. They can still be found in the wild, so don't worry about it too much if one of your favorites is on the list. At the moment, there are no restricted Pokemon...let's try to keep it that way.
Rare Pokemon These Pokemon are especially hard to find. As such, they cannot be chosen as starters, and the chances of running into them in the wild are slim even in the Remote Areas. However, they're fairly common in Victory Road, and, more often than not, they can be handed out as prizes for certain events. As such, they are as followed;
- All Pseudo-legendary Pokemon - Lapras - Kangaskhan - Ditto - Wynaut - Rotom - Spiritomb - Audino - Larvesta
Special Cases Some Pokemon are...different. That is to say, they don't quite fit into any of the above categories for one reason or another;
1) The 18 starters from the main series can be chosen as starters. Otherwise, they (along with their evolutions) are considered to be Rare, and will only appear in the wild in the Remote Areas and/or Victory Road. The only stipulation is that you may only choose one of these Pokemon. The other must be something else.
However, this only applies to characters starting fresh. If you're making someone from the Important Positions page, they will count as one of the rare Pokemon whichever position you're taking allows. Either way, for the sake of clarity, here's a list;
- Bulbasaur - Squirtle - Charmander - Chikorita - Totodile - Cyndaquil - Treecko - Mudkip - Torchic - Turtwig - Piplup - Chimchar - Snivy - Oshawott - Tepig - Chespin - Froakie - Fennekin
2) Fossil Pokemon cannot be chosen as a starter, and will not appear in the wild at all. However, trainers can still obtain them by finding their fossils in the Fossil Cave and reviving them. For the sake of convenience, however, they are otherwise listed as Rare. As such, someone making a canon position will be able to include them in their teams, and they may or may not be given out during events. They are as followed;
- Kabuto - Omanyte - Aerodactyl - Lileep - Anorith - Cranidos - Shieldon - Tirtouga - Archen - Tyrunt - Amaura
