It started here...
The locals were either crazy or had a shitty sense of humor. Marin pushed through a tangled mess of vines coming down from above while dense undergrowth snagged her pants, threatening to tear them. This was a hedge maze from hell. How in the world would a gym fit in this mess? She grimaced, feeling duped. Those people in Hapuu were probably laughing at the thought of her fumbling through the woods looking for a nonexistent gym.
Navigating through the woods, Marin could feel herself getting further and further from civilization and deeper into the unknown. The sounds of wild Pokemon rustling through the dark forest made Marin's skin crawl. She had to keep her wits about her. Luckily, she had pulled her hood over her head before entering the forest, otherwise it would be full of leaves and broken twigs by now. She began to pant with exhaustion, the heat and the effort it took to push through the dense foliage was wearing her down. But dammit, Marin was determined. If there really was a gym out here, she would challenge it.
It would be her first badge if she was victorious.
Marin hugged her egg close, not wanting its fragile shell to get scratched by the branches. She was too attached to the thing to leave it at the inn in Hapuu, so it would get a front row seat to her first gym challenge. She thought she could feel it move to the right slightly, and Marin tilted her head and smiled. But... Sure enough, to the right, there was what looked like a stone archway. Spongy, green mold blossomed in the cracked crevices of the arch and broken pillars. That was the closest thing to an entrance Marin had seen since she started her trek, so she changed course.
"Thanks, little guy," Marin whispered.
She walked across the cobblestone walkway, which was barely visible under the swarm of unkempt weeds that sprouted from it. Much to her disappointment, the walkway only led to more forest, and it looked thicker than what she had already passed through. Frowning, she persevered with a decisive nod. Hopping over hollow logs and ducking beneath low-hanging branches, Marin continued with stony conviction. There was no turning back now.
After hours of navigating through the labyrinth of trees, she spotted a man. He was older, with a beard that looked as choppy and unkempt as the hedges that surrounded him. The massive pair of clippers he wielded made her wary, but Marin did not doubt this was the gym leader:
"Verne!" she gasped, still catching her breath. She was a hot mess after battling the backwoods, sweaty with twigs and leaves clinging to her clothes. "I'm Marin, from Virbank City, and I," she paused to take a deep breath, "am here to challenge you."
