[Challenging Party: Phantump, Frillish, Clefairy]
[Music: Humilau Gym Theme]
Spurred with confidence from her victory against the Grass Gym, Karin wanted to try her hand at another as soon as she was capable. After her egg hatched, giving her a Frillish, she did a bit of looking around and deciding that the Ground Gym was her best bet for the next challenge. So she spent a few days doing some training and picking out some new moves for her Pokemon, then made the long journey to the resort city on the western end of the island.
When she got there, she was surprised to find that the gym was not just on the beach, but actually a part of one of the largest beachfront resorts. The guide reassured her that she wouldn't have to be a guest there in order to challenge the gym. He then described the gym to her: she would have to make her way through all of the beach equipment scattered through the gym in order to reach the end and get to the leader. Oh...so that's why the gym looked like a storage room for all of that stuff. Well, that was a bit of an exaggeration. Everything was spread out too much for it to be storage, and it looked like someone had built a few channels into the gym floor as well.
So once the guide finished, Karin nodded and made her way into the maze. She immediately found herself at one of the channels, with a board and a tall paddle sitting in the water in front of her and a wall of life jacket racks keeping her from moving forward in any way except through the channel. So, using the paddle for support, Karin shifted herself onto the board and struggled to find her balance for a moment, then rowed herself through to the other side.
On the other side, a trainer challenged her as soon as she got off, after asking if she could see herself trying out a paddle board like that. Karin shook her head, thinking that standing on a small board and using a paddle would never work out when she couldn't brace herself on, or jump to, solid ground in an emergency. Then, she battled the guy, beating a Nincada and Numel in the process. Once that was over, she found herself working her way through an arrangement of equipment that directed her to the next channel. This one was considerably wider, and had a kayak sitting in it. This much, at least, Karin managed to figure out quickly. Karin had never been in a kayak before, but for this short distance (indoors, no less) it was little different than a canoe. Getting out on the other side of a wall of other kayaks was a bit more of a challenge, but she managed it without flipping over or falling in. Somehow.
Another trainer challenged her as she got out, but he seemed more interested in telling about his own kayak adventures and Karin had to keep him on task while beating a Barboach and Sandile. They did sound kind of fun, at least, but that wasn't what she was here for. So once she was done, she made her way to a third channel, this one containing a surfboard and some artificially choppy water.
"Well, I guess I'm going to have to live with getting wet," Karin said, trying to find the best way to get onto the board without submerging herself. At least she'd dressed for the beach this time, although once again she found herself wishing she'd thought to change into a proper swimsuit before coming out to the gym. Fortunately, she got across the next wall of beach chairs and parasols while only drenching herself a little, then stepped out at the end of the gym floor. Then, at the top of the stairs leading down onto the beach, Karin saw her final 'obstacle': a jet ski in perfect condition sitting on display, just out of reach. "Sooo, why do I get the feeling that the point of this gym puzzle is to try and get us to rent this stuff," she thought out loud. Must have been the price of being at the resort.
Never mind that, though. Karin passed the jet ski, making her way down the stairs and out onto the beach. She caught sight of the leader and...oh wow. Whistling, Karin approached her. "Hey there. I'm here to challenge you for a badge," she said.
