Misty Mountains Cold [Mission]

Elise took in a deep breath, allowing the frigid air to pierce her lungs. The sighing exhale that followed was long a deliberate, as if she were trying to push the cold air away with her warmer breath. The ranger she spoke to about the situation and the tourist that issued the request seemed to be correct. The air was definitely much colder than her last visit to the mountains. The normally warm and humid air almost felt as though a Johto winter had fallen over the area. Fortunately, her coat and scarf were doing a good enough job of keeping her warm.
Her eyes glanced around as the fog her breath had created faded away. There was no frost on the ground. It still retained enough of its normal warmth to stay unfrozen. The dew that clung to the trees and bushes had frozen into small crystals of ice though. The mist that had pervaded the area before had dissipated as well, allowing the trainer a clear line of sight of the surrounding area. There were no signs that the cause of the change in environment was nearby. There were no visibly different trails to follow and the area was much quieter than it had been before.
As her gaze returned to her front, the woman began to think of the best way to find the cause. She was no ranger. She didn't have the wilderness training or experience that they and some trainers had. She didn't know how to track something properly. She had to choose a simpler solution. A minute or so passed before a thought jumped to the forefront of her mind. Perhaps the cold air would lead to her target? Surely it would be colder nearer the cause. If it was an ice type Pokémon like she thought it was, it would make sense for it to make its new habitat colder to accommodate itself.
With that thought in mind, the trainer resumed her search using the temperature as her compass. Several long minutes were spent playing a very literal game of hot and cold with the environment before she seemed to set herself on the right track. As she ventured deeper into the mountains, the air began to grow slowly colder and the ambient noises of the mountain grew even quieter until the clearest thing she could hear were her own breathing and footsteps. It seemed that most of the native wildlife were avoiding the area; another good sign that she was probably closing in on her objective.
Eventually, her search brought her within sight of a cave entrance. Despite the sunlight illuminating the entrance, she could not see far through its gaping mouth from where she stood. Yet, she could feel a consistent icy breeze wafting from the cave's direction. Perhaps it was just the cave, but the current circumstance told Elise that her target was probably within. Shifting her scarf to a more comfortable position, the young woman began her descent towards the cave to investigate. A bit of good luck would mean she would find the cause of the cold. If not, she would just have to continue her search. | ◀ MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS |

Your hunch proves correct. While there was no frost on the ground through most of the mountains, there was plenty of it around the mouth of the cave, and a frigid breeze blowing out from within. As you venture inside, you find several Pokemon huddling up to a Makuhita for warmth. Most of them scatter when they see you, but the Makuhita doesn't seem inclined to move, and continues to stand in your way. Gender: Male Ability: Thick Fat Moves: Tackle Arm Thrust Vital Throw Endure

As she came to the mouth of the cave, Elise began to notice the area growing considerably colder. Frost covered the ground and the lips of the cave's entrance. Each step she took resulted in an audible crunch as the thin layers of ice were crushed beneath her feet. A small smile formed across her lips. Considering the normal climate of the mountains' lower altitudes, the amount of ice and cold emanating from the cave definitely seemed unnatural. Perhaps she had found her target's hideout? It almost seemed too easy. Surely the Rangers would have found this place much easier than she had. Regardless, she couldn't ignore it and risk passing by the objective.
As she entered into the cave, something immediately caught her attention. Off to the side and a few feet away from a path leading deeper into the cave, several smaller Pokémon were huddled together for warmth. At the center of their huddle was a Makuhita that seemed to be providing warmth for the others. The fighting type didn't seem nearly as disturbed by the cold as the others, probably due to its natural layer of fat protecting it from the elements. The solidarity amongst the wild creatures brought another small smile to the trainer's features.
However, the echoing sounds of her footsteps as she made for the tunnel passage seemed to alert and startle the group. After examining the human for only a few seconds, a majority of the gathered Pokémon immediately scattered and fled. Some ran further into the cave to escape while others took cover behind larger rocks. Only the Makuhita seemed unsurprised by the intruder's appearance. Unsurprised as it seemed though, the fighting type clearly wasn't happy that she had scared off its group. It features contorted into a glare that was directed at the woman as it placed itself between her and the tunnel. It pounded its two hands together in the threatening manner, as if to tell her to back off.
Elise made eye contact with the angered Pokémon. Her first thought was that it was trying to prevent her from chasing after those who had fled into the cave. Perhaps it was trying to protect its turf? Regardless of its reasons, the lady had no intention of leaving and it didn't seem likely that she would be able to reason with in. She took one more step forward and grabbed a pokéball from her belt to show that, despite its warning, she would not back off. The fighting type also took a step forward. A battle was unavoidable.
”Muzét.” spoke the trainer as she dropped the pokéball between herself and the Makuhita. The ball snapped open, allowing the energy within to leap out and form her Ralts. The psychic type shivered as the cold enveloped it. Regardless, its attention quickly fell upon the hostile fighting type. ”Use Calm Mind.” was its order. The Ralts closed its eyes and took in a deep breath upon the order. As it let out its breath in a slow sigh, a faint psychic aura formed around its figure.
As per usual, the Makuhita did not sit idle while its opponent powered up. It ran forward with surprising fluidity and slammed into it with a full body tackle. Before Muzét could fall over though, the fighting type grabbed it and continued its assault by slamming it into the ground. The Ralts let out a grunt of pain and it was pinned to the ground. Fortunately, its dual typing resisted fighting type moves like Vital Throw, reducing the damage by a great amount.
”Get it off of you with Psychic.” Elise ordered. The Ralts did not hesitate on the order for a moment. Its eyes began to glow violet as energy of the same color surrounded it. With a sharp cry, it unleashed the energy in a powerful psychic blast that flung the Makuhita off of it. The fighting type was fell backward several feet and landed on the stone floor with a painful sounding thud. It seemed as though the battle was finished until the fighting type rose back to its feet with a pained moan. The trainer eyed the fighting type curiously. She was impressed that it was able to stand again after taking a super effective attack so close. There was a few seconds of silence before the fighting type charged forward again.
”Again.” said the trainer. Another blast of psychic energy struck their opponent, this time flinging it into a wall. For a few moments, she thought that the fighting type would rise again. However, no matter how hard it struggled, the wild Pokémon could not rise back up from defeat a second time. It lay quietly where it had fallen, breathing heavily from its exhaustion and injuries. The cave once again fell into silence.
”Well done, Muzét.” Elise said. The Ralts nodded quietly, though its attention was still on the Makuhita. It seemed to feel sorry for the fallen fighter. The young woman understood how her Pokémon felt to some extent, though she also felt some respect towards its powerful will and endurance. ”It will be fine. Let's keep moving.” she said. Even as she spoke, she could see the other Pokémon peering out from their hiding places to watch her. Muzét nodded reluctantly and was recalled back into its ball. Elise cast one last glance towards the fallen Makuhita as she walked past and deeper into the cave to resume her search. If it was still there when she came back out, she would perhaps patch it up and help it back to fair health. For now though, she would focus on her objective. | ◀ MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS |

After beating up the Makuhita, you continue deeper into the cave. Here, it begins to become more and more obvious that something more accustomed to the cold has moved in. Icicles hang from the walls, and a number of ice patches on the ground make it harder to keep a solid footing. You manage to get deep enough to run into more wild Pokemon though, also huddling around a warmer one. This one doesn't seem to be native, though. And from the way cold air is still blowing out from deeper in the cave, it's probably not the source of it either. The air did not become any colder than before as she moved deeper into the cave. The constant wind coming from deeper within was biting though. The gelid breeze strung against her bare skin, forcing Elise to pull her scarf up over her face to try and protect herself. Despite this though, it was clear that she was coming nearer her target. Icicles hung from the ceiling and the rocky ground had become icy, making it more difficult for her to keep her footing. The thick layers of frost covering the inner halves of the many stalagmites and stalactites glittered as they reflected the light from her flashlight.
Eventually, the trainer found herself entering a surprisingly plain room. It was a small area and the ceiling was only a few feet above her head. Yet, the part that intrigued her the most was how clear it looked. No stalagmites protruded from the floor nor were there any stalactites hanging from the ceiling. The walls were mostly smooth and, other than the frost now covering it, the floor was level. The only thing that stuck out in the room was a small pile of rocks in the far corner from where she entered. It did not seem as though the room held the cause of the cold though. She could still feel the breeze flowing from the other exit.
Still, the trainer's curiosity drew her to the pile of rocks in the corner. As she came closer to it, she could see that it wasn't merely a pile of stone, but rather a makeshift wall that covered the room's corner. Within its boundaries were several Pokémon, some that she recognized from the entrance of the cave, huddled around a Spheal. The fatty water type seemed to be serving the same purpose that the Makuhita had. As the light from her flashlight illuminated the mini room in full, the eyes of every Pokémon gathered fell upon her. Most seemed ready to flee from the human at the first sign of danger, but none moved.
The trainer smiled and took a step back from the group. She did not want to disturb them if she could help it. Unfortunately, her foot landed on a patch of ice, causing her to slip. The sudden movement from her as she attempted to stay on her feet startled the wild Pokémon. When they saw their opening, those that were huddled around the Spheal suddenly darted for the exit. Within only a few seconds, the room had been emptied, leaving only her and the water-and-ice type. The latter, like the Makuhita, did not seem happy about her mistake. As she rose back to her feet, she spotted the seal climbing out of its cover and confronting her.
”Guess there's no way around it, again.” she said as she rose back to her feet. She plucked one of the pokéballs hanging from her belt and tossed it between herself and the Spheal. The sphere burst open, releasing her Porygon onto the field in a flash of light and energy. The pixilated Pokémon glanced around the dimly lit cave before its eyes fell on the hostile Spheal. ”Exe, use Thunderbolt.” ordered the trainer. The program's body sparked for a moment before a large bolt of electricity was unleashed in their opponent's direction. The fatty seal was not fast enough to react in time, let along dodge, and suffered a direct hit.
Despite the large amount of super effective damage though, the Spheal was not yet defeated. Taking a moment to gather itself, the seal let out a roar and formed a large ball of ice in front of it. The glittering sphere remained in place only for a second before it was launched toward Exe. The normal type moved to the side to dodge, but wasn't quite quick enough. The ball struck its left side, shattering upon contact and dealing a small chunk of damage.
”It's forming another. Stop it with another Thunderbolt.” Elise ordered. The Porygon quickly rose back up upon the order. Its body sparked violently for a second before another wave of electricity was sent towards the Spheal. The wave struck dead on for a second time, shattering the forming ice ball and sending the spherical water type rolling into the nearby wall. This time, it did not seem to have the strength to rise again. It struggled weakly to flip itself back upright, but to no avail.
”Well done, Exe.” said Elise. She examined their fallen opponent for a moment before letting out a small sigh and turning to head deeper into the cave. The Spheal and Makuhita would both be fine. The other Pokémon would take care of them. The sooner that she found the cause of the cold and put a stop to it, the sooner they would be able to live normally again. | ◀ MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS |

Well, after beating the crap out of a non-native Spheal and just leaving it there, you make your way deeper still into the cave. The air just keeps getting colder the deeper you get, so it's clear that something has to be nearby. And then, sure enough, you find it. Not just a Pokemon, but a whole bunch of them, blasting cold air in all directions. Judging by their typing (not to mention the fact that they're all Vanillite), they probably originally came from the ice cream company in Kahakai. A few of them turn aggressive when they see you. Better get them to settle down. The wind blowing from within grew stronger as Elise continued deeper into the cave system. She could feel her body shiver often as she did her best to stay warm. Despite her coat, scarf, hat and other warm clothing, it was difficult to keep the biting cold at bay. Fortunately, her search did not last too much longer. After several minutes of following the wind trail, she emerged from the tunnels into a somewhat large cavern. The room was mostly dark, but in the dim light, the trainer could see three Pokémon near the center of the room. It took her a moment to recognize the three cone shaped creatures as Vanillite, probably escaped from the confines of Kahakia.
The woman eyed her targets for a few seconds. They were obviously the cause of the cold wind, but how they were able to keep the entire area chilled was a mystery to her. She did not have time to ponder the situation however. Their triangle formation kept the room in check at all times and it took no time at all for the three ice types to spot the intruding trainer. As the woman stepped forward, the trio of wild Pokémon stopped blowing their cold air to meet their challenger. Each had a glare on their face that openly displayed their hostility. It didn't seem like they were in the mood to fight fair or listen to any kind of reason.
”Gaius, Sol.” Elise called as she tossed two Pokéballs between herself and the advancing aggressor. The two spheres burst open to release their contents, her Pawniard and her Litleo. The two Pokémon immediately dropped into a combat ready stance when they saw their opponents. Sol cast a worried glance back at its trainer. Elise simply nodded reassuringly. Though outnumbered, they had the type advantage and were more than likely strong enough to face the three head on.
”Gaius, Iron Head on the far left. Sol, Flamethrower on the right!” the trainer ordered. Gaius was the first to move, charging forward towards the far left Vanillite. The blade on its head glowed brightly as it lunged forward, striking the first Vanillite with a powerful headbutt. The ice cream Pokémon let out a loud cry as it was struck the super effective attack and sent reeling onto the stone floor. It let out a soft moan of pain that was drowned out by the sound of battle as it struggled to rise again, but it did not have the endurance to do so.
At the same time, Sol opened its maw and launched a stream of flame towards the far right Vanillite. The ice type attempted to dodge by moving to the side, but its movement was blocked by the center of the team. The two wild Pokémon collided, allowing the flamethrower attack to land a direct hit. The jet of flame engulfed the ice type, dealing immense super effective damage. A few moments later, the ice cream Pokémon had fallen, unable to withstand the intense heat.
Upon seeing its two comrades taken down so quickly, the final Vanillite began to reel backward. Its confidence had disappeared and its will to battle had faded. As it retreated, it formed a silver orb of energy and launched it towards Sol. The orb struck the lion cub for a direct hit, but the fire type seemed to withstand the damage without any trouble. ”Cut it off with Flamethrower.” Elise ordered. Letting out a high pitched roar, Sol unleashed a second jet of flame that blocked the Vanillite from escaping. ”Iron Head.” was the final order. Gaius did not hesitate. It leapt forward from the first of the downed wild Pokémon, imitating its first attack. The steel type collided with the panicking Pokémon with a powerful headbutt, once again sending its target reeling and falling to the floor. Only a whimper and a weak struggle was put forth by the final of the trio before it fell still, knocked out by the attack.
”Well done you two.” Elise said. The trainer glanced around at the battlefield. All three of her targets were down for the count and could safely be turned over to the rangers. However, it would be a shame if she passed up the opportunity to capture one of her three opponents now that she was finished with the mission. Plucking a Pokéball from the pouch on her belt, the trainer tossed one at the last of the three Vanillite that they had beaten. As she her ball struck the fallen creature, she opened her Pokégear and dialed in the number of the ranger she had been given.
”...Yes, it's done. A pack of Vanillite, it seems.” she said. She listened quietly as the woman on the other end explained that they were sending Rangers to pick up the remaining targets. The woman thanked Elise for her trouble and further explained that she was free to leave when her business there was concluded. The trainer's eyes did not leave the still shaking Pokéball as she hung up and closed her pokégear. She wouldn't leave until she knew whether or not she had captured a new Pokémon. ”Very well, thank you. Alright you two, time to head out.” she said. | ◀ MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | Words. 877 | Notes.
